The Kentucky Derby will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs racetrack, in the heart of metropolitan Louisville. The race, watched internationally by millions, is heralded as "the greatest two minutes in sports," but to Louisvillians it's actually a two-week extravaganza, featuring a stunning fireworks display, balloon and steamboat races, and literally countless Derby parties.
Here are some tips for creating your own authentic Louisville-style Derby party at home: Setting the Scene - In Louisville, the Derby is all about color. From the jockeys' silk finery to the flowers lining the racetrack, bold and vibrant colors set the tone for a merry gathering. When selecting tableware, choose brightly colored fabrics for the tablecloth and napkins, with contrasting colors for plates and cups. If you have silver, this is the time to bring it out of storage and onto your table. Centerpieces should be floral - tulips and roses are the most popular choices in Louisville - but any array of brightly colored flowers will do. Bluegrass music playing in the background is essential. And don't forget horseshoes; they are a must-have decoration no matter where you put them. What to Wear - Whether they're wide-brimmed, feathered or floral, hats are the perfect accessory for your party. Brightly colored and seersucker fabrics are the traditional Derby favorites, but for the modern party guest anything goes. Fabulous Fare - Louisville is known for its delectable Derby dishes, such as Derby Pie, Bourbon Balls and - of course - mint juleps that are sipped and savored. Additionally, there are several tasty treats that can only be found in Louisville including Benedictine (a heavenly dip), Louisville-style Hot Browns and Frickled Pickles. Cocktails should include the Louisville-style Mint Julep, Mint Julep Martini and Bourbon Slush. Best Bets - Don't forget, it wouldn't be an authentic Derby party without the thrill of making a bet.
