Miss Cocktail's Manhattan
A classic made better

Q:How do I mix a Manhattan? During our recent visit to the US I had the drink on various occasions and I just loved it. On your Web site I could not find it. It is too common. Everybody knows how to mix it. But I live in Curaçao, a Dutch island in the Caribbean, and we do not know much about cocktails, apart from the sweet ones like Daiquiri and Pina Colada and so on. Thank you for enlightening me.

A:Thanks for your question. I have to tell you that I visited Curaçao and loved it. While in Willemstad I tasted quite a few new cocktails, but you're right -- they were mostly sweet frozen drinks. The Manhattan is much simpler, and doesn't mask the natural flavor of the ingredients.

Since there are several variations of the drink, I'll give you my favorites.

The Original Manhattan
1 shot whiskey
1/4 shot sweet vermouth
dash bitters

Stir ingredients in a large glass with ice. Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

The Perfect Manhattan
1 shot whiskey
1/4 shot sweet vermouth
dash bitters
rinse dry vermouth

Stir whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters in a large glass with ice. Rinse chilled cocktail glass with dry vermouth (just pour a little in the glass, swirl it around and pour it out). Strain chilled ingredients into cocktail glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
