South of the Border Sippers In May 1862, the Mexican Army defeated Napoleon's French forces threatening to occupy the city of Puebla. Seven thousand French troops started out towards the capital, a journey of more than 200 miles, in early April 1862. The soldiers were mistakenly convinced that a warm welcome awaited them in Mexico City. Though Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza had only two thousand men under his command, he succeeded in fortifying the Hill of Guadeloupe, just North of the city. The citizens of Puebla also joined the resistance armed only with farming implements and household tools. Together, they faced the direct onslaught of French soldiers and at the end of the day, May 5, amidst thick smoke and echoes of cannon fire, they defeated one of the strongest armies of the day. That heroic event is commemorated as a symbol of Mexican courage and determination in facing insurmountable odds and a superior army in defense of their national sovereignty. Here are some drinks inspired by that event. Adios Brave
