Swizzle
January 2004

Created in the Caribbean in the early 1800s, the swizzle takes its name from the utensil that was used to stir the drink. These stirring sticks were made from the long peeled stems of a plant with a fan-like branch of roots. The tall twig was placed roots down in the glass or pitcher and twirled quickly by sliding the palms back and forth, raising and lowering its fan to combine the ingredients. A proper swizzle will always contain sweetened, fresh, fruit juice; crushed or shaved ice and several dashes bitters in addition to the famous swizzle stick.
